When it comes to choosing a removal company many people often find the experience intimidating, especially when you consider that you will be entrusting a complete stranger to handle all your most valuable possessions with care.
Unfortunately this worry is not unfounded as there are many pseudo professional movers out there who are ready to take your money for moving what they see as ‘stuff’ from one place to another without giving your belongings the appropriate care and attention they deserve. Worse still some of them may take your money and some of your belongings may vanish entirely. No one wants to be stung by a cowboy company, so follow this advice to make sure your next move goes without a hitch.
One of the most important things to do when checking any mover’s website is to see whether they list their street address and telephone landline number. Removal companies that list generic names or that does not specify where their business is physically located may be trying to hide the fact that they are not in fact a professional company, or have the appropriate secure storage resources to meet your needs. If you can’t see this get in contact and arrange a visit to their site; if they refuse to let you or can only provide you with a mobile phone number for contact then the firm should be treated as suspect.
Once you have established the company’s location it’s time to check who they really are; check to see whether they have pictures of their staff members, vehicles and facilities. Are they branded correctly with the company’s name, or are they generic or look like they could possibly be photo shopped? Also check to see that they are available on Google Maps and Google Street View, however also remember that not all industrial estates and private roads can be found on here.
It is also worthwhile to check and see if the company is a member of any professional trade organizations such as the Nation Guild of Removers and Storers and the British Association of Removers. Members of these organizations are bound by strict criteria to ensure they provide a high quality service, it also means that in the unlikely event that something goes wrong during your move there you will have someone to turn to for help. Most good companies display their membership on their website, you can also visit the websites of these professional organizations to verify a company’s membership if you are in doubt.
When you are satisfied with the company it is recommended you contact them to discuss insurance options for your move, after all even the most professional and reputable companies can on occasion have accidents so make sure you’re insured against any minor mishaps. Having insurance also means that you are insured if for any reason your move is delayed or cancelled.
Lastly and perhaps most importantly; find out what their customers have to say about them. Look for reviews of the services the company offers, many already display their customers testimonials on their webpage but it is always wise to look at some reviews via an independent site such as Yelp or FreeIndex.
